Scotty B's Interview With Xavier Sharif

I had the opportunity to speak with Xavier Sharif 

a budding Atlanta Hip-Hop.

Q: How did you get into rapping?

Xavier: Originally I was more interested in being a singer.  I wrote my first song when I was six years old and my first musical influence was R. Kelly and my parents put me onto him really early.  When I started middle school I started getting interested into rapping and my friends and I would pass around a rhyme book but mine were more poetry because I was more interested in poetry.  One of my first favorite rap albums was 50 Cent’s Get Rich or Die Tryin’. So all of those components were like my first introduction to rap.

Q:  So can you sing?

Xavier: [Laughter] Here’s how I describe it. I don’t have any type of vocal training in how to sing.  I call it more of “crooning” but singing from the more technical background I would say no, I am trying to learn though you see what’s happening in the industry a lot of rappers and singers are doing the same thing. 

Q: So you just released an EP The Joyride, talk about how the story came about.

Xavier: The night Joyride speaks about is really two nights into one. It was in October 2015.  Those two in itself were crazy and just full of temptation.  My girlfriend and I at the time had a small break but we were still together but during that time I was very tempted looking at other women, and drinking trying to fill a void with what was happening in my relationship. But as the weeks went by it was very symbolic where my was soul and I started relating that night with my relationship God.  So The Joyride is just a metaphor.  I wanted to use my music as a journal and be really transparent.

Q: When did you feel the conviction from God?

Xavier: It was the next morning.  I actually woke up on one of my homie’s couch the next day.  I saw all the missed calls and I was thinking “I really fucked up” and I thought I was going to lose everything that I had.  That’s when I started being more reflective and started soul searching. I didn’t start writing that EP till December.  I used all of November reflecting.

Q: So what did your Girlfriend think?

Xavier: [Laughter} She was actually in some of the recording sessions.  I told her “this is real” and “I am not going to lie”

Q: So that next morning did you tell her everything that happened?

Xavier: Nah, all I told her was waking up on the couch and not doing that again and that’s all she knew until I started recording the EP.

Q:  Then what was the conversation after that?

Xavier:  She was a little upset that she had to find out on the phone.  That’s why I wanted her to be in the some of the recording sessions and some more personal things I rather not share. 

Scotty B's Interview With Jazzy

After hearing Jazzy’s voice on Fabolous’ Summertime Shootout mix-tape series I knew I had to interview her.  One problem though, I couldn’t find her online, (shout outs to Google though) I eventually found her on Instagram and found a link to, Bonnie, her EP.  I didn’t know what to expect, would it be the same Jazzy from the mix-tapes?  Would it be something totally different?  I must say Bonnie exceeded my expectations.  If you’re looking for something to vibe and chill with friends, or just ride in the car by yourself then this is the EP for you.

I must say she exudes the type of authenticity in conversation that is oh so apparent in her music.  

Q: How did you get started in music?  

Jazzy: I was always very musical and my friend sent me this beat and I wrote to it and it was mad cool.  I was like “yo I can write songs”.  I knew that I could sing but I didn’t know I could write. That was like 2 ½ years ago.

Q: You’ve progressed that fast in 2 ½ years?

Jazzy: Yeah

Q: What are your musical inspirations?

Jazzy: I love Rihanna she’s amazing besides that I like a real sound.  I feel like Jazz [music] in itself is sort of like speaking sometimes.  I kind of do that, I sing and speak, I feel like it’s really me.  Someone told me that the other day they said “you sound like what you sound like right now in your songs” I’m like that’s awesome, I’m always going to sound better on a record but if you can say that to me then that’s fuckin’ lit. 

Q:  Your music comes from an authentic place.

Jazzy: Yeah, definitely, I wouldn’t say I’m a super fan of anyone, I listen to so much music and it all inspires me really.  I just like to, when I can, be able to relate to it.

Q: There’s a line in the song Show Me “I wanna know why you are who you are” what is the inspiration behind that lyric?

Jazzy: You could get to know a person, but you change from day to day.  So I want to know why you are who you are today. 

Q: So what is the theme for Bonnie?  Are you looking for your Clyde? Do you have your Clyde?

Jazzy:  I have my Clyde. If you listen close enough you’ll get the story.  I think if anyone loves something or someone that much they will ride for it no matter what.  It something everyone can relate too. 

Q:  So you’re from New Jersey?

Jazzy: Yeah 

Q:  Are you planning to branch out or leave New Jersey? 

Jazzy: I don’t want to stay in Jersey for too long.

Q:  No, New York City? It’s right there.

Jazzy:  I love the city, if I was to move right now, I’m definitely going to stay nearby, but I’m not going to stay in New Jersey.

Q: I could see you in Atlanta.

Jazzy:  That’s cool; I want to spend time in a lot of different places.

Q: So what’s your situation right now?

Jazzy:  I’m working

Q:  I know a lot of people are coming to you trying to manage you.

Jazzy:  I’m not trying to worry about all of that yet, I don’t like touching that kind of stuff. I will know when it is the right time.

Q:  So, in the future working with Fabolous, is there a mix-tape collaboration? I could see y’all doing a whole mix-tape together. 

Jazzy: [Laughter] I don’t know.  I’m sure I’ll have a lot more songs with him he’s super awesome. 

Q:  How did you meet him [Fabolous]?

Jazzy:  I just hit him up and I was like “I think should we make songs together, I’m pretty cool, just check this out if you want” and he did he said, “yo this is really cool” [laughter] it’s lit.

Q:  You made it sound so easy you just hit up Fab and that was it. 

Jazzy:  I feel like if you’re going to represent something it has to be really good.  I felt like this was really good, and based off what he’s doing I definitely think he’ll like this.  I was just like let me try and shoot my shot.

Q:  I saw one of your online videos ,D4MN, how did you come up with that.

Jazzy:  I was in the studio one day, and it [C Murder’s Down 4 My Niggas] was on the iTunes library and I just started singing Amerie [1 Thing] to it and I was like “this is fire”.

Q:  What is your writing process like?

Jazzy: To be honest sometimes it’s spiritual, it calms me, and sometimes I’ll write to nothing.  I just know when it has to live, when I think of something or write something then it needs to be or I need to work on this. I do get lazy with writing sometimes if you’re not feeling too inspired then you’re just writing and you’re not putting your best work forward. 

Q:  So what’s next for you? 

Jazzy: 2017 is going to be great, I know that much.

Tink Winter's Diary 4 Review and Link!

Although, I HATE to give mix-tape reviews the next day after the release it is a must because of the world we live in, EVERYTHING IS A ONE DAY TURN AROUND!  So here it is…..

After discovering Tink about three years ago on livemixtapes.com I have been a fan ever since.  So I was definitely excited when I discovered that she was releasing the fourth installment of her Winter’s Diary series.  As promised it would be released at 12:00am on August 25, however technical difficulties did not bring this to fruition, it was released hours later (don’t ask me what time, I went to sleep). 

My Favorite Tracks (No Order):

Be Single

Aquafina

Nothing Else Matters

Blood, Sweat, and Tears

  

Pros: 

The Production Quality:

The production quality of all her mixtapes are always on point.  I have always loved the producers she has worked with…it’s like she has a way of picking beats that ride effortlessly with her voice/rhymes.  She worked with some new and old producers from past projects which include C-Sick,  Cookin Soul,  1500 or nothin, and Jahlil Beats.  Sidenote: She always introduces me to a lot of lesser known producers who are really talented.

Only one feature:

Tink enlisted help from her Chicago brethren, Lil Durk, on Stay on It.  This is only the second feature she has used in the entire Winter Diary’s series (the first one came on Winter’s Diary 1 Feeling Myself feat. Ricco), you have to respect an artist who doesn’t need anyone/features to complete a project i.e J Cole. 

Sensual, Sexy, and Encouraging:

Winter’s Diary 4 makes you want to be in-love.  Tink always has a tasteful way of talking about sex and love which makes you want to be able to experience it something that I feel is missing from R&B.    Her last track however makes you feel like you can conquer the world and it brings everything around full circle.

Cons:   

Takes a minute:

It takes a minute to get where she is going with this project.  From past Winter’s Diary she usually captures you from the first song I.e Treat Me Like Somebody and I Like but by the time Be Single is finished playing you are fully engulfed in the project. 

Recycled Bars:  

The second to last track Pullin’ Up is clearly recycled Bars which is almost cringe worthy.  She has used those bars many times most notably on Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club…I really expected more from her she could’ve left that track off this project.
